Intrusion Detection and Prevention Solutions
Although the installation of a firewall will protect you to a point, they are in essence a fairly basic security measure. Once an intruder is inside your network, they become ineffective and as such Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) become a key part of your network to find those intruders.

IDS will look more deeply into packets on your network and determine if a payload is malicious or not and the Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) should be used to complement your firewall architecture.

IPS works by rather than detecting an intruder already inside of your network, it seeks to prevent malicious traffic actually entering the network in the first place.  They will actively block and prevent malicious traffic thus preventing you having to make reactive courses of action to an attack already in your network.
