FIREWALLS
A firewall is often the first line of defence for an internal network. Its primary task is to enforce a security policy between different zones of trust on a network; typical zones would include an internal network, the Internet, a private Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) for Mail and Web servers or possibly a partner company network. Typically, the firewall will act as a gateway between zones of trust and route traffic at the IP layer between them. There are three common types of Firewall technology, Packet Filter, Proxy and Fully Stateful.
